What's A Day like in the life of a Radiological Waste Operations Manager?

You will manage the safe and efficient operation of the Solid Radioactive Waste route for all AWE sites, liaising with internal customers, external parties who receive the waste as well as the both the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) & the Environmental Agency (EA) to ensure procedures are adhered to and compliance and legal requirements are met.

You will take ownership of the delivery of the Solid Radioactive waste operational activities in accordance with the operating instructions, safety assessments and deliver these services within the service level agreement targets.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Setting the direction and developing a shared understanding of individual's roles in delivering the AWE vision and strategy.

  • Undertaking first level leadership of the team.
  • Maintenance of the Solid Radioactive Waste Route in accordance with Safety Case, Legislative and Company SQESH requirements.
  • Responsible for all funding associated with the delivery of the delegated waste route.
  • Effectively managing and reporting the performance of external suppliers.
  • Maintaining and promoting high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality and be a great team player.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing the Operations associated with the Solid Radioactive Waste Service whilst maintaining compliance with the Nuclear Site Licence, Environment Agency Licensing and Exemptions and other Regulatory Specifications and Improvement Conditions as specified.
  • Ensuring compliant waste disposal options are available for Solid Radioactive wastes on the AWE sites.
  • Communicating between AWE waste generators and external treatment and disposal service providers.
  • Interacting between AWE & the MOD through either Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) or the Sellafield UK site.
  • Maintaining an awareness of Waste Management matters both on the AWE site and nationally with a view to enhancing the Company's business.
  • Ensuring the delegated Waste process maps remain valid and undertake appropriate periodic review.
  • Maintaining Emergency Response Arrangements in line with Company, ONR and EA requirements.
  • Liaising with other departments as appropriate in the furtherance of the delegated Waste route.
  • Preparing and maintaining Operational documentation/reports (e.g. plans, programmes, reports, weekly updates).
  • Preparing and monitoring financial forecasts against expenditure items within area of accountability.
  • Assembling waste management processing information for the Senior Manager Waste Operations for Solid Radioactive waste route.
  • Generation and implementation of Asset Change Requests as required by Asset Change Manager (ACM) role.
  • The Company may require you to fulfil any other reasonable duties aligned to your position from time to time in line with business needs.
